THE STORY BEHIND STONE SCIENCE

Hi, I’m Bryan.

Hi there and welcome to Stone Science! My name is Bryan and my flooring experience began in concrete foundation work in 2006, continuing with restoring marble and setting tile for the past 10 years. Over time, I've become extremely passionate about two things. First and foremost is the customer experience...

THE PROBLEM YOU CAN'T ALWAYS SEE

Why do tile floors fail? The problem isn't always visible.

Cracked grout and broken tiles can be warning signs, but problems with the bond can begin long before you see damage. Here's what can happen underneath an otherwise normal-looking floor.

UNDER THE SURFACE

It's all about the contact.

Thinset mortar should support the tile with adequate coverage. Straight trowel ridges are designed to collapse as the tile is embedded.

Properly embedded Supported

Collapsed ridges create continuous contact beneath the tile.

Gaps left underneath Unsupported

5 QUICK QUESTIONS

01 What are thinset ridges supposed to do?

When mortar is combed in straight lines, moving the tile perpendicular to those ridges helps flatten them into the valleys, release air, and create good contact across the back of the tile.

02 Why are 'rainbows' and 'cookies' a problem?

Curved trowel patterns can trap air. Spot-setting with separate dollops (sometimes called β€œcookies”) leaves gaps instead of the mortar coverage tile needs. Unsupported areas can contribute to loose or cracked tile.

03 Can incorrectly mixed thinset cause issues?

Yes. Too much or too little water, or failing to follow the product's mixing and working-time instructions, can affect how well mortar works and bonds. The correct process depends on the specific mortar.

04 Can this happen before grout or tile cracks?

Yes. Poor mortar coverage can be hidden under a floor that still looks intact. Cracks, movement, or a hollow sound can be clues, but none proves the cause by itself.

05 Is thinset coverage the only cause of floor failure?

No. Subfloor movement, inadequate movement joints, moisture, and other installation conditions can also play a role. The underlying cause should be checked before choosing a repair.

Customer Stories

What Our Customers Are Saying

Real experiences from homeowners, contractors, and businesses using Stone Science products.
I contacted Stone Science after I tried every possible cleaning product on my shower for mold and mildew. Bryan recommended their peroxide based cleaner and after one treatment it immediately fixed the recurring mold and mildew in my shower. It's been 3 months and it still hasn't returned. This is a miracle product, and I will definitely purchase again.
I wish I had this tool sooner for my previous hollow flooring jobs. It was super easy to use and the customer service for all my questions was great. You can tell Bryan has a real passion for this and he was very helpful with the purchase and use of the hollow injection tool
I hired Bryan to fix my floor that was riddled with hollow tiles throughout my entire condo. I had grout cracking and a few broken tiles and was facing a full replacement after my condo hired a subpar company to install the floors. The company prolonged the warranty process for so long that i lost my ability to have it covered by the building. Instead of spending upwards of $100,000 to replace my floor, I had bryan fix it with his system. My floor took 120 gallons of adhesive so clearly my floor was a complete failure. It's been almost a year and i have had no more tiles pop up and the hollow sound is fixed. I'm so happy to have found his company and even happier to hear that he is selling this to other contractors so homeowners just like me don't get saddled with an entire replacement.
I purchased Stone Science Daily Neutral cleaner for our lobby marble floors. The cleaners kept using different products that would always leave etches. I'm very happy to report that the etching has stopped now that they have an all purpose cleaner that can be easily added to a mop bucket or spray bottle. I also love that it's a concentrate and takes up little storage.
